Introduction There are many studies that show how music therapy helps people with mood disorders. People with depression can benefit from music therapy because through music therapy they can lessen the symptoms of depression. In the studies and cases that will be mentioned we can see that music therapy is effective through methods like group therapy. It is shown that people with depression that go through music therapy are affected in a positive way. Overview of Mood Disorders Mood disorders are a class of behavioral-emotional disorders labeled by disruption in mood. Examples of this are depression or extreme elation. W. R: Thank you for having me on the program: it is a pleasure to discuss ‘Educating Rita’. Host: Willy how close is Rita’s story to your own? W. R: Is it that strikingly obvious Sam? I was a male hairdresser and owned my own salon before I began to compose novels, which enabled me to construct a more realistic character for Rita. ‘Educating Rita’ could be seen, as a semi-autobiography as I have already experienced the difficulties of being working class and I am aware of the challenges people with this social background may endure. Similarly to Rita I also dreamed of better things, and returned to further education as a mature student attending evening classes at university, immersing in the delights of English literature. Host: Your mentor for Rita is Frank a flawed professor, why did you create such a complex mentor for Rita? W. R: Frank is perfect for Rita in his ‘imperfections’ as a real studious, pedantic professor would have frightened Rita off. At the start of the play, Frank and Rita can be seen as opposites and any friendship between the two seems unlikely, but they quickly warm to one another as first appearances show. Frank sees Rita as a breath of fresh air in his life and he responds very well to her cheeky and irreverent approach to almost anything. They are both involved in unsatisfactory relationships, and they both want more from life than it seems to offer. Host: Rita’s marriage breaks down due to her newfound ambitions to change herself. You construct Danny as a largely un-sympathetic type, was this deliberate? W. R: No, Danny’s character was never created intentionally to be un-sympathetic, this perception of Danny is a result of his inability to understand Rita’s wish to be educated. He is the archetypical figure that represents the opposition to Rita’s desire for change. Danny has a traditional view of the role of women and expects Rita to settle down and have children. He does not like that she is trying to break away from their lower class lifestyle. When he discovers that Rita has secretly been taking the pill to stop herself becoming pregnant, he blames her behaviour on her desire to ‘better’ herself and burns her books, this act is symbolic as throughout history books have been burnt to no avail and knowledge cannot be destroyed by something as weak as fire. Danny’s intentional rejection to embrace the new, spells the end of their relationship. Host: Educating Rita can be linked to the growth, changes, as well as sacrifices made by Andy in The Devil Wears Prada where Andy is on a journey seeking to begin her life as an adult who is faced with moral and ethical choices. David would you agree that transitions into the world have greater risks and potential losses than possibilities? D. F: Well Sam, Andy begins as a strong, grounded character, opposite to Rita who becomes more and more preoccupied with success. However similarly to Rita, Andy realizes the job is lonely and in order to achieve great success there must be great sacrifices. This is linked to Rita, as they both need to make sacrifices in order to excel, beginning with their partners. The tension in the relationship between Andy and her boyfriend is evident through the constant reference to the â€Å"old Andy† who he believes has gone. Nate Andy’s boyfriend is a constant reminder of where she came from, similarly with Danny. Host: It seems that although Rita and Andy have benefited, they lose a great deal including their individuality. Would you agree Willy? W. R: Well, Rita has some of the rough, and possibly more original, edges of her personality knocked off, however the things she loses are no longer of great value to her. Rita desires to â€Å"know everything† in order to have choice and direction in her life, as evident by ‘I wanna discover meself’. Choice, to Rita, is more then ‘eight different types of lager’ as described by Denny and their social class. She now has a lot more freedom with regards with her future and what she wants, as she is educated. She has gained confidence in herself to associate with â€Å"proper† students. Host: Any comments on this David? D. F: Sacrifices need to be made in order to succeed Sam. Andy was initially unwilling to change her appearance even when pressured by colleagues. However she eventually goes through a dramatic costume change, squeezes into a size four dress with a sleek new haircut and expensive stilettos, which make her dis tinguishable from the rest. Host: Finally would you agree Willy that if something is worth achieving it will involve struggle? W. R: Any transitions into new and different worlds will involve a form of struggle, potential risks and if successful in this change, rewarding possibilities. While all three options provide him with lucrative prospects, he is unable to decide which one to opt for. Now what we must understand here is that while the three prospects are all related to what Dave needs to do in the future, we must take into account the fact that they are different in their respective natures(PINCUS, 1986). The first one is an opportunity that is provided to him by Mr. Thorne, the second by Mr Irwin and the third is an offer from a pension fund management company in Houston. However, what is to be noted is that Dave needs to select a job that provides him with the maximum level of satisfaction. The first prospect is an opportunity that Dave views as a great opportunity. From what can be seen in the case study, Dave says that it was his dream to be working as a software developer. The second prospect however, is lucrative on a monetary basis. This is one where Dave stands a cha nce of making a huge amount of money. However, there is a risk(Sell, Cleal, 2011). The risk is that Dave only gets one opportunity to make it big. However, from what can be seen and what has been mentioned by Dave, this opportunity would only last for a limited period of time and it Dave would only get one chance at making it big. What he does with the money is not our concern but Dave stands a chance to make a huge amount of money in a single shot(Shandler, 2009). The third is a conventional job that guarantees security. From what can be seen from these options, and what we come to know of Dave from the case study, we can say that Daves best choice would be to opt for the first option. This is because, if we utilize the theory of workforce motivation, it becomes extremely clear that Dave likes the kind of work that the first option offers. This would lead him to providing a greater effort thus providing a better output. However, in the second option, money can be seen to be a moti vational factor. But we cannot consider to be a viable option as it contains extremely high risks(ZIEGLER, HAGEN, DIEHL, 2012). This rules out the possibility of choosing the second option as something to consider. Although the second option provides the opportunity of earning a huge amount of money, it is to be noted that Dave is not motivated by the work itself. This would not work in Daves favour as such a situation would lead him more towards failure than success. As a result, it is once again not an effective choice. When we take into account the final option, we can see clearly why it is not a viable option. While the job is a secure one, it is to be noted that it does not motivate Dave to a huge extent. This is particularly important to be taken into account as this means that Dave would not be an effective employee in this organization. While the job provides him security, it does not provide him with any sort of satisfaction. As a result, Dave would not work in this case t o his utmost potential. From a comparison between the three choices that Dave has in his hands, it is evident that the first option is the best choice for Dave. From what we have in the case study, the primary aim in this case is for Dave to be happy. As a result, we have to select the one choice that makes him happy. Workforce motivation is the primary aim that we focus on in this case. From an assessment of the options that Dave has in his hands, the first option has the maximum potential for him to succeed. The first option gives him something like an objective. The first option is what can be seen to be fulfilling his expectation to the utmost level. As a result, the first option is the best choice for Dave. Conclusion Dave would do his best if he chooses the first option. The first option provides him with all the tools necessary to succeed in any endeavour. The second and the third have varying attractiveness and motivational factors. While the second kind of job is one where money works as a motivational factor, the third is one where there is a kind of security. However, when we take into account, these factors are useless in this case as Dave would basically lack any job satisfaction in these cases. While the second option does not guarantee any security, the second does not seem to be exciting in any manner. Hence, Dave would not prefer any of those two options. These two options would not provide any kind of job satisfaction which in turn would lead to lower productivity on the part of Dave. Dave himself mentions that he had always wished to be making a computer application which is what he gets to do in the first case. As a result, he should definitely opt for the first option. The first op tion would provide Dave with the optimum level of Job satisfaction which would help him, give an effective output. As a result, it would not only help him become a better employee, but also help him to brush up his own skills.
