You construct Danny as a largely un-sympathetic type, was this deliberate? W. R: No, Danny’s character was never created intentionally to be un-sympathetic, this perception of Danny is a result of his inability to understand Rita’s wish to be educated. He is the archetypical figure that represents the opposition to Rita’s desire for change. Danny has a traditional view of the role of women and expects Rita to settle down and have children. He does not like that she is trying to break away from their lower class lifestyle. When he discovers that Rita has secretly been taking the pill to stop herself becoming pregnant, he blames her behaviour on her desire to ‘better’ herself and burns her books, this act is symbolic as throughout history books have been burnt to no avail and knowledge cannot be destroyed by something as weak as fire. Danny’s intentional rejection to embrace the new, spells the end of their relationship. Host: Educating Rita can be linked to the growth, changes, as well as sacrifices made by Andy in The Devil Wears Prada where Andy is on a journey seeking to begin her life as an adult who is faced with moral and ethical choices. David would you agree that transitions into the world have greater risks and potential losses than possibilities? D. F: Well Sam, Andy begins as a strong, grounded character, opposite to Rita who becomes more and more preoccupied with success. Host: It seems that although Rita and Andy have benefited, they lose a great deal including their individuality. Would you agree Willy? W. R: Well, Rita has some of the rough, and possibly more original, edges of her personality knocked off, however the things she loses are no longer of great value to her. Rita desires to â€Å"know everything† in order to have choice and direction in her life, as evident by ‘I wanna discover meself’. Choice, to Rita, is more then ‘eight different types of lager’ as described by Denny and their social class. She now has a lot more freedom with regards with her future and what she wants, as she is educated. She has gained confidence in herself to associate with â€Å"proper† students. Host: Any comments on this David? D. F: Sacrifices need to be made in order to succeed Sam. Andy was initially unwilling to change her appearance even when pressured by colleagues. However she eventually goes through a dramatic costume change, squeezes into a size four dress with a sleek new haircut and expensive stilettos, which make her dis tinguishable from the rest. From what can be seen in the case study, Dave says that it was his dream to be working as a software developer. The second prospect however, is lucrative on a monetary basis. This is one where Dave stands a cha nce of making a huge amount of money. However, there is a risk(Sell, Cleal, 2011). The risk is that Dave only gets one opportunity to make it big. However, from what can be seen and what has been mentioned by Dave, this opportunity would only last for a limited period of time and it Dave would only get one chance at making it big. What he does with the money is not our concern but Dave stands a chance to make a huge amount of money in a single shot(Shandler, 2009). The third is a conventional job that guarantees security. From what can be seen from these options, and what we come to know of Dave from the case study, we can say that Daves best choice would be to opt for the first option. This is because, if we utilize the theory of workforce motivation, it becomes extremely clear that Dave likes the kind of work that the first option offers. This would lead him to providing a greater effort thus providing a better output. However, in the second option, money can be seen to be a moti vational factor. But we cannot consider to be a viable option as it contains extremely high risks(ZIEGLER, HAGEN, DIEHL, 2012). This rules out the possibility of choosing the second option as something to consider. Although the second option provides the opportunity of earning a huge amount of money, it is to be noted that Dave is not motivated by the work itself. This would not work in Daves favour as such a situation would lead him more towards failure than success. As a result, it is once again not an effective choice. When we take into account the final option, we can see clearly why it is not a viable option. While the job is a secure one, it is to be noted that it does not motivate Dave to a huge extent. This is particularly important to be taken into account as this means that Dave would not be an effective employee in this organization. While the job provides him security, it does not provide him with any sort of satisfaction. As a result, Dave would not work in this case t o his utmost potential. From a comparison between the three choices that Dave has in his hands, it is evident that the first option is the best choice for Dave. From what we have in the case study, the primary aim in this case is for Dave to be happy. As a result, we have to select the one choice that makes him happy. Workforce motivation is the primary aim that we focus on in this case. From an assessment of the options that Dave has in his hands, the first option has the maximum potential for him to succeed. The first option gives him something like an objective. The first option is what can be seen to be fulfilling his expectation to the utmost level. As a result, the first option is the best choice for Dave. Conclusion Dave would do his best if he chooses the first option. The first option provides him with all the tools necessary to succeed in any endeavour. The second and the third have varying attractiveness and motivational factors. While the second kind of job is one where money works as a motivational factor, the third is one where there is a kind of security. However, when we take into account, these factors are useless in this case as Dave would basically lack any job satisfaction in these cases. While the second option does not guarantee any security, the second does not seem to be exciting in any manner. Hence, Dave would not prefer any of those two options. These two options would not provide any kind of job satisfaction which in turn would lead to lower productivity on the part of Dave. Dave himself mentions that he had always wished to be making a computer application which is what he gets to do in the first case. As a result, he should definitely opt for the first option. The first op tion would provide Dave with the optimum level of Job satisfaction which would help him, give an effective output. As a result, it would not only help him become a better employee, but also help him to brush up his own skills. He enters all the facts he has discovered and uses them to help solidify his position in the minds of the jurors As the trial goes on Rudy is given another problem. A beaten girl is discovered by Rudy at the hospital during his studying. Her husband has repeatively beaten her with an aluminum softball bat. Her ankle is broken and her life is in shreds. Rudy knows that these beatings will continue if the couple divorces but the young girl of 18 is unable to leave because she believes that she is still in love with him. n John Grisham does not maintain one single story, instead he creates numerous events so that the reader does not get bored with the main story. From minor cases to FBI investigations, John Grisham does a swell job in creating a global society. He shows that lawyers have cares concerns about what is going on in the world and contrary to popular belief, lawyers dont focus mainly on cases and they have lives to. Ever-since The Firm was published, in 1991, John Grisham has been in a creative state. His five books that followed the firm, combine to form a total of approximately 50 million copies in print. Why ? The answer is because his thrilling stories and intense legal intrigue is in such a great demand. Now in The Rainmaker Grisham has weaved his talent into the storyline and has created a powerful, and at times humerous , tale of one young lawyers quest for fame,fortune and most importantly, hapiness. The War of Regulation In a world where rules and laws seem to outline a direct image of morality and logic, all while shaping our view of the world and the best ways to regulate it. What if I were to tell you some of these laws where hindering the progress of the problems they were trying to fix, and unnecessarily spending tons of money while doing it. Here I will discuss with you a war that was officially declared by the 37th president of the United States, Richard Nixon. We as a nation have been fighting this â€Å"war† for over four decades and has been a wrongful use of our taxes in many different ways. This state of affairs and our decisions along the way not only affect us, but affect other people and their livelihoods continents over. In June of 1971 this war was officially coined â€Å"The War on Drugs.† This war has been a burden on us and causes major problems for the people involved. These are, but not limited to, racial injustice, causing big problems for Central and Southern American countries, and the fact that it’s not working. The prohibition of drugs has gone back further than the official declaration of the war. It actually has its roots deeply seeded in racial affairs. According to an article called â€Å"A Brief History of the War on Drugs† on drugpolicy.org, (Author and Date unknown) the first anti-opium laws in the 1870s were directed at Chinese immigrants. The first anti-cocaine laws in the early 1900s were directed at black men in the South. The first anti-marijuana laws, in the Midwest and the Southwest in the 1910s and 20s, were directed at Mexican migrants and Mexican Americans. Each of these situations are examples of the use of fear and xenophobic tendencies used to sway a populations view on a political standing, of a few and not the people. As stated by an article found on alternet.com called â€Å"Race and the Drug War,† (Desiree Evans, 2002) in the town of Tulia Texas, 12% of the African American community was arrested and prosecuted in 1999 on drug charges. This was solely based on the word of one undercover cop that was later exposed as corrupt. In accordance with a paper called â€Å"A Brief Review of the System of The New Jim Crow† authored by Laura Branca (Dorothy Cotton Institute 2017) nearly 80% of people in federal prison and almost 60% of people that are in state prison for drug offenses are black or Latino. Central and Southern American countries are among the most directly affected countries in the wake of all this. According to an article on worldpress.com, authored by Joshua Pringle in 2015, Otto Perez Molina, the late president of Guatemala, said that the crusade is costing Central American countries hundreds of millions of dollars and tens of thousands of lives every year. The bulk of these losses come from groups like the drug cartels. On the report of an article on bbc.com called â€Å"Mexicos most wanted: A guide to the drug cartels,† authored by Duncan Tucker in 2018, the government in Mexico succeed in capturing/and or killing some of the biggest names at the time. Things were quiet for a while, up until around 2012 where organized crime related violence started to skyrocket. It was said that the governments’ previous efforts merely broke the cartels up into smaller often more violent gangs. The last problem I will discuss is the wars non effectiveness. As stated by vox.com in a article called â€Å"The War on Drugs Explained† by German Lopez (2016), The US has spent over $1 trillion dollars on this effort alone. All this money, but to no avail. Much of this money spent on law enforcement cracking down on drug prohibition where to this day, 40 years later, drug addiction is still a serious problem. The US also has some of the highest rates of drug related deaths around the world. As stated by a segment titled â€Å"The Highest Overdose and Drug Related Death Rates in the World,† on worldatlas.com written by Jessica Dillinger (2018), the US holds a staggering rate of 245.8 overdoses per million. These numbers lie right above Iceland with 221.2 and El Salvador with 160.1. Its a lot to take in at first glance, but there is a way to help level the situation and address all the issues stated earlier. This solution comes in the form of drug legalization. This means you would be able to acquire and use without criminal prosecution and the government would be able to regulate and tax the commodities. Alcohol or tobacco would be good comparisons. We need something that works, and with legalization it has the chance to significantly reduce the rate of deaths related to drug usage. We reduce the ability of people to get the medicine they need freely to reduce pain, to relieve nausea from chemotherapy, and among other symptoms. We interfere in other countries like Mexico and Afghanistan. I chose this article because it give some insight of a different perspective of the situation. I chose this article because it shows how that trying to deal with these issues on the surface doesnt work and can make the problem worse.
